SAQSAYHUAMAN, HOUSE OF THE SUN
MIKSAD, RICHARD W. / ALVA HURTADO, JORGE E.
This book explores the Saqsayhuaman House of the Sun, one of the greatest, yet least understood, monuments of the Inca Empire. Located on a ridged headland overlooking the Inca capital of Cusco, Peru, it includes three major ceremonial precincts: the Temple of the Sun on the Saqsayhuaman Ridge, the Suchuna (Rodadero) on the Suchuna Ridge, and the Qocha and Chinanas surrounding the Muyuc Cancha basin.
The archaeology, engineering, architecture, cosmology, and paleohydrology of the three ceremonial precincts are discussed with a focus on how the Inca used the visual and auditory interplay between stone and water to materialize their cosmological belief system. Special attention is given to the construction of the world-famous megalithic zigzag Northern Walls. The book concludes with a discussion of how centuries of neglect and deliberate destruction threaten not only the future preservation of the iconic Northern Walls, but also the entire House of the Sun.
